Minimally invasive surgery is about smaller incisions that lead to faster, easier recoveries. It’s about getting patients back to work and other daily activities as quickly as possible. At Genito- Urinary Surgeons (GUS), we call it “the next generation of urology care.” Our physicians are board-certified urologists with many decades of combined experience. They perform a comprehensive array of minimally invasive techniques (robotic/laser) in all areas of urologic disorders.

ROBOTIC SURGERY – In 2003, we performed the first da Vinci® robotic prostatectomy in Northwest Ohio. The da Vinci system accurately translates the surgeon’s precise hand motions using “wristed” laparoscopic instruments. This allows for the performance of complex dissection and reconstruction through a few small incisions. This potentially allows our surgeons to preserve the nerves that help with erectile function and bladder control.

As the most experienced robotic surgeons in Northwest Ohio, we also use robotics for kidney surgery such as cancer, reconstruction or repair. We performed the first da Vinci robot-assisted pelvic reconstruction for incontinence and pelvic prolapse in Northwest Ohio.

PROSTATE VAPORIZATION uses energy to vaporize tissue. The specific advantages of using vaporization are a decrease in blood loss, reduction in the risk of complications and faster recovery.

BRACHYTHERAPY is a form of radiation treatment for prostate cancer that involves implanting tiny radioactive pellets called “seeds” into the cancerous prostate gland. The seeds emit radiation that kills the malignant tumor. Men with small early-stage tumors confined to the prostate are good candidates for brachytherapy. We also use transrectal ultrasound to map the prostate and a computer to calculate its volume, the number of seeds needed and the precise placement of the seeds. We were the first physicians in Northwest Ohio to perform this procedure.

CRYOTHERAPY is a minimally invasive treatment for prostate cancer and kidney tumors. This treatment uses extreme cold to freeze and destroy cancer cells.

LASER LITHOTRIPSY is a surgical procedure to remove stones from the urinary tract. It uses a fiber passed through an instrument to deliver a laser beam to break up the stones.

ULTRASONIC LITHOTRIPSY uses high-frequency soundwaves delivered through a probe to break up the kidney stone.

EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCKWAVE LITHOTRIPSY (ESWL) uses highly focused impulses projected from outside the body to pulverize kidney stones anywhere in the urinary system. This technique usually reduces the stone to sand-like granules that can be passed in the patient’s urine. Larger stones may require several ESWL treatments. The procedure takes less than an hour and is done here in our surgery center.

Our doctors combine skill, experience and compassion in treating urologic problems using the most advanced minimally invasive techniques. Using the latest urologic diagnosis and treatment innovations, we deliver the highest-quality and most experienced, patient-focused urologic care in the area.
