Mayer L. Wainstein, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Mayer Wainstein was born in Miami, Florida, but grew up in Portsmouth, Ohio, where he graduated from high school in 1957. He attended Ohio State University and received his undergraduate degree with a Bachelor in Science and Anatomy in 1961. He was then accepted to Ohio State University College of Medicine and graduated in 1965. While in medical school, Dr. Wainstein was fortunate enough to receive a Borden’s Scholarship in Medicine to do research in immunology. Also while at Ohio State College of Medicine, he did research in the field of pancreas transplantation under the guidance of Dr. Robert Zollinger, a world famous surgeon, who was the discoverer of Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome.
After Dr. Wainstein graduated from Ohio State College of Medicine, he then moved to Cleveland, Ohio to do an internship in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital of Cleveland. Following his year of internship at Mount Sinai Hospital, he transferred across town to the University Hospital of Cleveland (Case-Western Reserve University) to do a year of general surgery. While at Case-Western Reserve University, Dr. Wainstein was drafted into the United States Air Force as a Captain. He spent two years at Vandenberg Air Force Base with the 392nd Aerospace Medical Group doing general surgery at a tertiary care hospital.
After being discharged from the Air Force, Dr. Wainstein returned to Case-Western Reserve University to complete a Residency in Urology. This was done under the direction of Dr. Lester Persky, who was very well known for his work in prostate cancer. While a Resident at Case-Western University in Cleveland, Dr. Wainstein presented several research papers at national meetings in various areas of urology.
After completing his residency in urology at Case-Western Reserve University, Dr. Wainstein moved to Toledo, Ohio to join Dr. Gregor K. Emmert, Sr. in the practice of urology. Dr. Wainstein has lived in Toledo and has been practicing urology since 1972. He was certified by the American Board of Urology. He was made a Diplomat of the American Board of Urology in 1975. Dr. Wainstein became a fellow of the American College of Surgery in 1976. He was elected to the Society for Pediatric Urology in 1979. He has been involved in teaching the Residents at the Medical College of Ohio, and now more recently, the University of Toledo Medical College Center. Dr. Wainstein is a full Clinical Professor at the University of Toledo College of Medicine. He has been a member of the American Urology Association since 1975. He is also a member of the North Central Section of the American Urology Association. Dr. Wainstein is past President, serving two terms on the Northwest Ohio Urology Association, which was comprised of all of the urologists of Northwest Ohio. He also served as President of the Ohio Urologic Society, which is comprised of urologists from the entire state of Ohio. Dr. Wainstein has served on the Executive Board of Toledo Hospital, holding the position for twelve years. Dr. Wainstein also served as Head of the Section of Urology at The Toledo Hospital for several years. He also served as Chairman of the entire Department of Surgery at The Toledo Hospital for two years. He is a past Counselor of the Academy of Medicine of Toledo, and served on several committees, both at Toledo Hospital, as well as the Academy of Medicine. Dr. Wainstein has chaired the Credentialing Committee for the Department of Surgery at The Toledo Hospital. He has been active in the teaching of urology residents and medical students at the University of Toledo College of Medicine for the past several years. Dr. Wainstein has a special interest in urological cancer, especially prostate cancer, and has had a significant experience in the surgery of prostate cancer. He also has an interest in general urology, having an active practice in the treatment of urinary tract stones and benign diseases of the prostate. Dr. Wainstein sees patients at the main office in Toledo on Executive Parkway, as well as a satellite office in Bowling Green. He works actively at The Toledo Hospital, St. Vincent’s Hospital, and Wood County Hospital in Bowling Green.
