Daniel S. Murtagh, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Daniel Murtagh, a native of Toledo, is a graduate of St. Francis de Sale High School. He received his undergraduate degree from Notre Dame University in 1975. He earned his Medical Degree (1978) from the Medical College of Ohio, now known as the University of Toledo, College of Medicine. He completed his residency in Urology at the University Of Michigan Medical Center and returned to Toledo in 1983 to join Genito-Urinary Surgeons. He has been a Clinical Associate Professor of Urology at the University Of Toledo College Of Medicine since 1983 and remains active in residency training.

Dr. Murtagh has been Board Certified in Urology since 1985 and was recertified in 1993 and again in 2004. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). He is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Urologic Association, and the North Central Section of the AUA, the Ohio State Medical Association and the Ohio Urologic Society. He served on the Board of the Academy of Medicine of Toledo from 1988-1990. He was elected President of the NWO Urologic Society (1996) and the President of the Ohio Urology Society in 1997. He went on to become the Ohio State Representative to the North Central Section of the AUA (1998-2000) and served on the Executive Committee for two years.

Dr. Murtagh has served two terms as the Chairman of the Section of Urology at The Toledo Hospital from 1990-1994. He was elected the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at The Toledo Hospital, and served two terms in that capacity from 1994-1998. He was elected President and Chief of the Medical Staff at the Toledo Hospital, in 1998 and served two year as Vice President (1998-2000) and President and Chief of Staff from 2001-2003. During his term he was on the Acute Care Board of Toledo Hospital and Chairman of the Quality Care committee. He was chairman of the Toledo Hospital Medical Executive Committee and Chairman of the Credentialing Committee (2003-2004). Dr. Murtagh was on the founding board Toledo Community Lithotripter and was a member of the Board of Directors, from 1995-1997. In 1998, he became the president of Northwest Mobile Lithotripter and was subsequently appointed a member of the Board of Managers of the American Kidney Stone Management Company. He serves as its Corporate Medical Director. He has developed and oversees the quality outcomes and data collections responsibilities of the company. Dr. Murtagh has a keen interest in Quality Outcomes and data collection. He did special training in Quality outcomes and development of standards of care at Intermountain Health Care in Salt Lake City. He has done numerous projects to standardize pathways of care to help reduce the cost of care while maintaining quality. He has published work in this area. He has also participated in numerous research projects.

Dr. Murtagh has been a pioneer in bringing new surgical procedures to Northwest Ohio. He was the first in Toledo to perform a percutaneous nephrostolithotmy, a prostatic seed implant, and cyroablation of the prostate. He has vast experience in each of these procedures. His areas of interest are in Urologic Cancers, Prostate Disease, Kidney Stone Disease, Erectile Dysfunction, Bladder Dysfunction, and Incontinence. He is frequently invited to speak on these topics. Dr. Murtagh is involved in community service as a member of Rotary International. In addition, he is a member of the University of Toledo Foundation Board where he is Chairman of the Philanthropy Committee. He is a past member of the Alumni Committee of the Medical College of Ohio. Dr. Murtagh sees patients in Toledo, Wauseon, and Archbold.

In his spare time, Dr. Murtagh enjoys fly fishing. He is married and the father of two sons.
