Richard I. Tapper, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Tapper completed his undergraduate studies at Ohio State University and received his M.D. degree from Ohio State in 1967. While a student at Ohio State he was selected for membership in the AOA, a national society honoring academic excellence in medical studies and was selected for membership in the Landacres Society which honors excellence in scientific medical research.
Dr. Tapper completed his internship year at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee in 1968, remaining at Vanderbilt where he completed a year’s general surgery residency in 1969, followed by the completion of his Urology residency at Vanderbilt University Hospitals in 1972. Throughout medical school and residency years Dr. Tapper participated in numerous research projects, publishing papers in prestigious medical journals such as the Journal of Urology and presenting at various peer reviewed national meetings.
Dr Tapper is certified by the American Board of Urology and is a Fellow of the American
College of Surgeons. He is a member of numerous local and national professional medical organizations such as the American Medical Association, the American Urologic Association, The Ohio State Medical Association, The North Central Section of the American Urology Association, The Academy of Medicine- Lucas County, and was honored by selection for membership in the prestigious Society of Pediatric Urology.
Over the years Dr. Tapper has been actively involved in the various professional societies of which he is a member having served as a past President of the Ohio Urologic Society (1991-1992), a past President of the Northwestern Ohio Urologic Association (1990-1992), and a past President of the Toledo Urologic Society (1990-1992).
In 1985 Dr. Tapper was instrumental in bringing the first lithrophter to the Toledo community, forming the first joint venture between doctors and hospitals in this area. The group venture included twenty physicians and seven hospitals. Urology patients in Toledo and the surrounding area benefited early by local access to the twenty second lithotripter in the country. Dr. Tapper served as President and Medical Director of the Toledo Community Lithotripter Corporation from 1985 through 2005.
Over his years in the private practice of Urology, Dr. Tapper has been appointed and elected to serve in many professional capacities within the Toledo community. Dr. Tapper served as a Board Member of ProMedica Health Systems from 1985 through 2003. At The Toledo Hospital, Dr. Tapper served as Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery (1989-1991), as Director: Division of Urology (1991-1993), as Medical Staff President Elect (1993-1995), as Medical Staff President (1995-1997). Dr. Tapper has been a clinical Associate Professor (Department of Urology) at the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo since 1974 and is currently a staff member at seven Toledo area hospitals.
Dr. Tapper joined Genito-Urinary Surgeons, Inc. in 1974. He currently serves as President of the Parkway Urology Center Board of Directors and has been the Medical Executive Director of Parkway Surgery Center since 1997.
